Just before 2 a.m. on Sunday, October 23, 2022, officers from the Iowa City Police Department were called to a report of shots fired in the alley next to the H-Bar at 220 S. Van Buren Street.

When officers were on their way to the scene another report came in of at least one person being injured by gunfire. Officers arrived and found 36-year-old Waymond Thomas of Iowa City had been shot. The police officers provided medical aid to Thomas and, once Johnson County Ambulance Service arrived, he was taken to an Iowa City hospital. Thomas passed away at the hospital.

On Monday, March 13, the Iowa City Police Department announced that 19-year-old Antonio Scotton of Cedar Rapids has been arrested in connection to Thomas' death.

According to our news partner, KCRG TV-9, Thomas and a friend had reportedly approached Scotton about an assault. Thomas allegedly punched Scotton, and a fight among several people broke out.

During the altercation, the person with Thomas reportedly dropped a gun which Scotton picked up and fired as he and some others attempted to leave the scene.

Iowa City Police say Scotton had been kicked out of the H-Bar and also shot at the establishment, damaging a wall.

Scotton (photos below) has been charged with Voluntary Manslaughter and Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon. Both charges are Class C felonies. Scotton is being held at the Linn County Jail on Mays Island in Cedar Rapids on a hold for the Iowa City Police Department.
