By Benjamin Flowers: Today, the Pesticides Control Board (PCB) condemned the recent contamination of the water supply in San Vicente Village, Toledo district, by a malicious resident. Carbaryl 85% WP
The incident occurred on May 16, where the resident emptied a bottle of Malathion 57 EC into the community water supply, which resulted in some residents becoming ill.
The PCB said that a 2021 study conducted by the University of Belize showed that malathion, the active ingredient of the formulated pesticide product in question, is one of the six active ingredients that were considered to pose health risks to users.
“This despite malathion formulations being categorized among pesticides unlikely to present acute hazard, based on their established acute lethal dose. Nonetheless, all pesticides are poisons, and their unintended uses can be fatal, or cause serious adverse effects to human health and the environment,” the PCB said.
The PCB also noted that the pesticide used in the San Vicente is believed to have been brought into the country illegally, as the formulation for the Malathion used in the incident was not a formulation registered for use in Belize.
The PCB went on to say that it is working with its partners and stakeholders on enhancing the pesticide management framework to create interventions that will prevent similar occurrences in the future. The Board also wished a speedy recovery to everyone affected by the San Vicente incident.
